Boss reveals why Minteh went off - and winger's words will delight Hurzeler

And the player’s post-match words might have brought a smile to the face of his Seagulls boss.

Minteh starred in a 3-1 win for Gambia away to Kenya in a World Cup qualifier.

Head coach Johnathan McKinstry was waiting to take him off when Kenya, who were 3-0 down, pulled a goal back late in the game.

Minteh scored and had an assist as Gambia dominated the first half.

He looked disappointed as he was withdrawn a few minutes from the end - which might have been due to the fact his team had just conceded.

McKinstry said: “We were waiting to make that substitution on the side to swap out the winger.

“Yankuba was fatiguing a little bit.”

Despite the impressive win, Gambia are well out of the running to qualify for the finals in North America and Mexico next summer.

Minteh has made an impressive start to the season for club and now country.

His goal was a clever one-touch finish with the outside of his left boot to nudge a through ball past the oncoming goalkeeper.

But, in a reply which will have been music to the ears of Albion head coach Fabian Hurzeler, he recognised the importance of work against the ball.

Minteh told Sports Eye Media: “I think the defensive side was working really hard.

“Kenya has a very strong team. If you want to win the game, you must defend, it is not only attacking.”
