NFL Friday night: Chargers break through against Kansas City

Los Angeles quarterback Justin Herbert threw for 318 yards and three touchdowns as the Chargers ended a seven-game losing streak against the Kansas City Chiefs with a 27-21 victory on Friday night in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

The Chargers’ previous victory against Kansas City had come on Sept. 26, 2021, when Herbert threw for 281 yards and four touchdowns.

Despite his passing numbers, compiled as Herbert completed 25 of 34, the quarterback put away the second game of the NFL’s 2025 season with his legs.

Facing fourth-and-7 and a nine-point deficit, Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes completed a 49-yard pass to Hollywood Brown to set up a field goal with 2:34 remaining.

Kansas City used all its timeouts to get the Chargers to third-and-14 on the snap before the two-minute warning. But Herbert scrambled for 19 yards and was able to kneel out the six-point victory after that.

Los Angeles also ended the Chiefs’ streak of 17 consecutive victories in games decided by eight or fewer points.

Six players from Alabama high schools and colleges got on the field in Friday night’s game:

Bradley Bozeman (Handley, Alabama) started at center for the Chargers.

Harris sustained an eye injury during an Independence Day fireworks mishap and was not cleared for contact drills until Monday. Harris joined Los Angeles as a free agent in March.

Chargers wide receiver KeAndre Lambert-Smith (Auburn) was targeted once but did not have a reception in his NFL debut. Los Angeles chose Lambert-Smith in the fifth round of the NFL Draft on April 26.

Scott also served as the holder for two field goals and three extra points.
