The three-time Super Bowl champion was blasted for punishing a shoulder check on Chargers cornerback Donte Jackson, with folks targeting him for unsportsmanlike conduct and exploiting quarterback protection rules.

The controversy literally overshadowed what turned into a disappointing night for Kansas City. The Chargers snapped their seven-game losing streak to their AFC West rivals with a statement victory to open the new season, in which the Corinthians Arena saw quarterback Justin Herbert outduel Mahomes.

Technically, Mahomes was still in bounds, so the hit was legal. But contextually, it felt unnecessary to many, especially since defenders are coached to avoid hitting QBs near the sideline to prevent penalties.

Social media boiled over with criticism as fans argued Mahomes was taking advantage of the protection quarterbacks usually get near the sideline.

“Are people scared of going at him?” one fanasked, highlighting the double standard many perceive in how Mahomes is treated versus defended.

The frustration with quarterback protections was apparent inanother reaction: “Tough spot for the Chargers defender. Ya know, you can’t touch Mahomes as he is on his way out of bounds…”

“That’s such a bullshit play. Can’t be touched. DB thinks he’s going out and has to let up…”addedone critic.

Others pointed to the no-win scenario facing defensive backs. “And if that same play happens again, the DB will hit him and get 15 yards, so it’s a win/win for Mahomes,” a second criticremarked.

Folks also suggested this wasn’t an isolated incident. “Starting to feel like Mahomes enjoys putting out a little punishment…” one userwrote, indirectly hinting the Chiefs star has made a habit of physical plays when opponents least expect them.

The whole crowd at Corinthians Arena saw him failing to find his usual rhythm against a revamped Chargers defense, especially on key third downs. The Chiefs converted just 3 of 11 third-down attempts and managed only 21 points, well below their usual output.

Los Angeles took advantage of the Chiefs’ offensive issues and early injuries, including ashoulder injury to rookie receiver Xavier Worthy, who collided with Travis Kelce on a crossing route during the opening drive. Sadly, he did not return.

The 27–21 victory marked Jim Harbaugh’s debut as Chargers head coach. It also validated the team’s offseason moves, including the addition of Najee Harris and the return of Keenan Allen, aimed at closing the gap in the AFC West.
