Why Roy Keane isn't playing for Manchester United legends vs Celtic

Manchester United have sent a legends team up to Glasgow today to take on their Celtic counterparts.

The fixture is being held in aid of the Celtic FC Foundation and the Manchester United Foundation with Bryan Robson leading the Reds at Celtic Park. A number of notable players will be featuring for United this afternoon including Darren Fletcher, captain for the occasion Michael Carrick, Dimitar Berbatov and Patrice Evra.

However, one of the biggest names who represented both clubs will not be in attendance. Roy Keane captained United and represented the club between 1993 and 2005.

He made 479 appearances in total before moving on to Celtic. Injury would cut his spell in Scotland short, though, and he retired having racked up just 12 games for the Glasgow club.

Some fans may be surprised to see Keane not playing today but the 54-year-old has already expressed his reason for not featuring in charity matches. "I'm not fit," he previously told Off The Ball.

"I'm far from fit. My fitness levels are actually very, very embarrassing.

"Just because I've not put on loads of weight doesn't mean to say I'm fit.

"I wouldn't really be able to do any running.

"Put it this way, I've been invited a number of times over the last few years to play in legends games, or whatever you want to call it. I'd find it really difficult because I wouldn't be able to get around.

"Too many injury problems. I try to have a decent diet obviously and I'm wary of putting on too much weight, but I certainly wouldn't be fit enough to go on any sort of run."

Instead, Keane will be featuring on TV our screens in the UK this afternoon as England meet Andorra in World Cup qualifying. Thomas Tuchel's men have a 100 per cent record in qualifying so far and are expected to advance to the tournament being held in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Keane will be joining presenter Mark Pougatch and fellow pundit Ian Wright for ITV Sport at Villa Park. You can - meanwhile - follow proceedings between Celtic and United legend here.
