Hincapie was rock-solid for Ecuador
Piero Hincapie gave Arsenal fans with an early insight into his game. He held the back line for Ecuador in the 0-0 draw with Paraguay. The player has signed on loan for from Leverkusen with the option of a £45m buy next summer.
He looked confident and calm for the full 90 minutes of the game. Although, mostly played as a left-sided centre-back, when called upon, he also shifted into a right-back slot showing his abilities.
Hincapie wasn’t just assured, he looked like a player who thrives under pressure. Every duel was fought with bite, every pass carried intent. For Ecuador, he was the wall that kept Paraguay at bay. For Arsenal, this was an early sign that they’ve added a defender with the grit and sharpness.
Arteta’s next tactical weapon
What makes Hincapie even better is his versatility. He started at Leverkusen last season as the left player in a back three. He can also play as left-back as well. This will help Mikel Arteta use the player’s best qualities.
Hincapie has the talent to partner with Gabriel Magalhaes in central defence. This could be equally as important for the squad. That is especially when William Saliba is recovering from an ankle injury.
Aside from his defensive duties, he makes runs with ease and with the ball at his feet. This suggests that he could help give Arsenal some extra flair. One thing is clear, Arteta now has another great option who is capable to control the backline for the north London side.

Hincapie is exactly the type of defender Arsenal have been looking for. He is a tough, calm and adaptable defender. If he bring this much-needed level to the PL, he may a fan favourite in no time.
