Saudi Pro League club Al-Nassr reportedly used Manchester United great Cristiano Ronaldo to try and convince Bruno Fernandes to join them this summer.
United captain Fernandes, 30, was a player in-demand during the summer transfer window, with Al-Hilal pushing hard to sign the Portuguese international before the Club World Cup. MEN Sport understands that the midfielder gave serious consideration to that transfer, but ultimately decided to stay at Old Trafford.
Ruben Amorim is believed to have spoken to Fernandes and urged him not to leave. That encouragement to stay ultimately forced Al-Hilal to move on to other targets.
However, it is not thought to have deterred all Saudi Pro League clubs from pushing for Fernandes in the transfer window. Journalist Ben Jacobs understands that Al-Nassr attempted to use Ronaldo to weaken Fernandes' resolve.
It's believed that Ronaldo is now firmly involved in Al-Nassr's transfer policy and that he spearheaded an 'informal approach' for Fernandes in late July. This approach was batted away swiftly though, and, as we know, the 30-year-old remains a United player.
Jacobs did admit, though, that it is unclear whether United's determination to keep Fernandes will be there for much longer. The Portuguese midfielder is out of contract in 2027 so next summer presents them a last realistic opportunity for United to make good money on his sale.
The journalist understands that Fernandes only has his sights set on staying in Europe for the next 12 months for the time being. The Manchester Evening News understands United's midfield is next in line for a makeover - with Carlos Baleba expected to remain a target.
