Commanders Coach Speaks on Buzz Around Rookie Running Back

Through training camp and preseason, the major storyline for the Washington Commanders was the ongoing holdout of wide receiver Terry McLaurin. However, while this was occurring, another potential long-term piece of the offense slowly started to emerge.

Following a lackluster final season in college where he only appeared in one game, running back Jacory Corskey-Merritt fell to the Commanders in the seventh round of the draft. Since arriving in Washington, he's slowly turned heads with his impressive play.

Croskey-Merritt put together a strong showing in the preseason, leading to chatter about him possibly being a featured back for the Commanders this season. It seemed the team had similar feelings, as they traded Brian Robinson Jr. to the San Francisco 49ers for draft compensation.

Unfortunately for Croskey-Merritt, this didn't end up being the case. In Washington's first official depth chart of the year, he is slotted in as the fourth-string running back. That said, he still received praise from a key member of the coaching staff.

Commanders OC speaks on rookie Jacory Croskey-Merritt

In the midst of the strong start to his NFL career, Croskey-Merritt became a bit of a fan favorite within the Commanders. Ahead of the season opener, offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury was asked about the buzz generating around the rookie running back.

Kingsbury applauded what Croskey-Merritt has been able to overcome in his journey to the NFL while acknowledging the massive wave of support he has received from Commanders fans.

"It's been interesting. He's a guy I have a ton of respect for his journey no doubt," Kingsbury told reporters. "We'll see how it all goes, but it's a big hype train for old Bill."

There might not be a clear path to consistent snaps, but Croskey-Merritt is someone who has to keep himself ready at all times. Veteran Austin Ekeler will be Washington's top option in the backfield. While he is a viable dual-threat option at running back, he has an extensive injury history as well.

In the event Ekeler finds himself sidelined at any point in the year, Croskey-Merritt is someone who could be called upon to help fill the void.

Although he's low on the depth chart, the rookie hasn't let it get to him mentally. He is prepared to provide a boost for the Commanders in any way possible. For now, all he can do is wait and see if he'll get to make his NFL debut Sunday against the New York Giants.
