Kobbie Mainoo has responded to speculation on social media underlining his desire to leave Manchester United following a theory which was emerged from a cryptic message.

The midfielder, 20, failed to secure a move away from Old Trafford in the final stages of the transfer window after requesting a loan move. Despite not using the England international in the first two Premier League games, Ruben Amorim remained keen to retain Mainoo.

Mainoo started the EFL Cup defeat to Grimsby Town last week, before coming off the subs bench in United's win over Burnley after that. The academy graduate took to social media on Friday to share images of him hard at work during the international break.

"Nothing pretty," he wrote on Instagram alongside several pictures of him training in the gym.

Alongside the images, Mainoo included a mysterious photograph from the acclaimed film Whiplash, citing the moment protagonist Andrew smashed through his drum kit.

As a result, supporters were quick to claim the mysterious picture was a hint at Mainoo's frustrations of his current situation at United. Fan page 'The United Stand' shared the picture and posed a question of whether the post was a cause for concern or just a coincidence.

Mainoo responded to the post, commenting on 'Stretch' on the post, seemingly confirming that any speculation or theories emerging from his post are not accurate.

The post has drawn plenty of interest in the past day after Chelsea's Cole Palmer - who is friends with Mainoo - commented: "3 my boy" alongside a red love-heart emoji.
