Manchester United have the chance to sign players again when the January transfer window opens for business

Manchester United are back in Premier League action next Sunday. They face an away trip to the Etihad Stadium to face rivals Manchester City. The Red Devils have four points on the board from their first three fixtures.

They have lost to Arsenal, drawn with Fulham and beaten Burnley so far this season. Ruben Amorim’s side saw off the latter 3-2 in their last outing before the international break. Bruno Fernandes scored a last-gasp penalty against the Clarets at Old Trafford.

Manchester United target Mike Maignan

According to Fichajes, United have ‘set their sights’ on a move for AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan. The 30-year-old, who is a France international with 32 caps under his belt, is out of contract at the end of the campaign. He is due to become a free agent in June next year if nothing changes.

Maignan, who is 6ft 3inc, has been on the books of his current club since joining them back in 2020. He has been a great servant to the Serie A giants and has been their number one. The stopper has made 166 appearances in all competitions, three of which have come this term, and has won the league title once during his time at San Siro.

The ‘keeper rose up through the academy at PSG and was a regular for the Ligue 1 side at various different youth levels as a youngster. Despite playing for their B team, he never featured for the first-team. Instead, he was sold to Lille and became their first choice before AC Milan came calling.

United could see Maignan as someone to provide competition with new boy Senne Lammens between the sticks. Lammens was snapped up on deadline day from Royal Antwerp. If Maignan joined the Red Devils, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see either Andre Onana or Altay Bayindir leave, or both.

Following his move to England earlier this week, Lammens said: “This is my dream move. When I was five, United was at the height of football and you keep in your memory how big Manchester United is, so, when I heard they were interested, it was like a childhood dream.

“I remember being a kid, Manchester United winning the Champions League and winning the league, and also [I want] to help the team get to a level that you can compete for a title again and to play Champions League again. That’s also one of my biggest points, that I want to grow with the team and go up to the heights that used to be Manchester United.

“It’s one of the biggest clubs in the world and the Premier League is the biggest competition in the world. In my team in Antwerp, there were some players who were also in England and, when I talked to them about. Manchester United, you could directly see their face change. The club alone, the aura of the club, it’s massive, and being here today, seeing it, it’s a different level. It’s crazy. So, that was also a big part of why I chose Manchester United. I’m very happy that we could get it done today.”
