Indianapolis Colts: Elevate SEC Running Back for Week 1

The Indianapolis Colts’ running back room could be shorthanded for Week 1 against the Miami Dolphins. Tyler Goodson has been dealing with an elbow injury ever since the second preseason game against the Green Bay Packers. Although Goodson was a limited participant in this week’s practice, the Colts listed him as questionable, and the team may need a backup plan, with only two healthy backs on the active roster.

According to Mike Chappell of FOX59/CBS4 Sports, the Colts have elevated rookie Ulysses Bentley IV for gameday. The undrafted free agent can be elevated three times during the regular season without penalty, but a fourth elevation requires a promotion to the active roster. Bentley’s elevation suggests that Tyler Goodson may not suit up on Sunday.

Mississippi’s running back Ulysses Bentley IV (24) runs the ball all the way into the end zone and scores a touch down during the Egg Bowl game against Mississippi State at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium on Friday, Nov. 29, 2024.

After spending the first three years in college with the SMU Mustangs, Ulysses Bentley IV transferred to the Ole Miss Rebels for the 2022 season. He wasn’t very effective in his three seasons in the SEC, finishing as the team’s fifth-leading rusher in 2022, the second-leading rusher in 2023, and the third-leading rusher in 2024. Bentley rushed for 419 yards, averaged 5.0 yards per attempt, and scored five touchdowns across 13 games in 2024.

Because of his age, limited production in the SEC, and lack of athleticism, he went undrafted in the 2025 NFL Draft.

The Indianapolis Colts signed Ulysses Bentley IV as an undrafted free agent in May. The 24-year-old rookie had a strong preseason, leading the team in rushing and rushing touchdowns, with 94 yards on 22 carries and two scores, plus two receptions for 13 yards. Unfortunately, the Colts waived Bentley during roster cuts, but re-signed him to the practice squad.
