Exclusive: Newcastle to keep tabs on Barcelona youngster also linked with Man United after summer transfer interest

TBR Football understands that Barcelona’s Marc Casado was the subject of interest from Newcastle United in the summer.

Newcastle signed Anthony Elanga, Jacob Ramsey, Malick Thiaw, Nick Woltemade and Yoanne Wissa in a busy transfer window. Alexander Isak left on transfer deadline day for a British record £125m, while homegrown midfielder Sean Longstaff also departed.

Eddie Howe’s side managed to replace Isak with Woltemade and Wissa, but did not add a recognised central midfielder to replace Longstaff’s place in the squad.

However, they did look for alternatives, and could return to the search for a central midfielder in upcoming transfer windows.

Newcastle enquired with Barcelona over Marc Casado, but Hansi Flick made it clear he wanted 21-year-old to stay

TBR Football chief correspondent Graeme Bailey reports that Casado is a player Newcastle are huge admirers of, and they asked about him in the summer as they looked at midfield options.

Bailey said: “The likes of Atalanta’s Ederson and Atletico Madrid’s Conor Gallagher were on Newcastle’s radar as they considered bringing in another central midfielder. Casado emerged as a possible option for Eddie Howe and enquiries were made.

“Clubs like Man United, West Ham, Atletico Madrid and Marseille were linked in the summer but Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick was keen to keep the 21-year-old international at the Nou Camp.

Flick said last month: “I don’t think he wants to leave the club, and I also want to have him here, because it will be a tough season. We need every player. I think he gives us a lot of confidence in the team, in the squad.”

Bailey also reports that Newcastle could return to their interest in Casado in the 2026 transfer windows, although he will likely be in demand again.

Games – 42

Goals – 1

Assists – 2

Trophies – 3

Bailey continued: “Casado is a really interesting name to keep an eye on heading into 2026. Newcastle do need and wanted something extra in midfield and he is someone who does appeal.

“It remains to be seen if he is attainable in the near future, but if he is available, then Newcastle are likely to be in the mix.”

Newcastle could get a closer look at Casado in the Champions League this season as they welcome Barcelona to St James’ Park in the Champions League later this month.
