National media use the same word to describe Newcastle star Dan Burn's performance in England…

Newcastle United defender Dan Burn played the full 90 minutes as England cruised to a 2-0 win against Andorra.

It is the 33-year-old’s third appearance for the Three Lions, having made his debut against Albania at Wembley in March. However, Villa Park was the venue as England took on Andorra in World Cup qualifiers.

Dan Burn went relatively untroubled against a side 170 places below them in the FIFA rankings, but the Newcastle United man will be pleased to have got a full 90 minutes for his country.

The towering defender kept his third clean sheet in as many appearances for England, but picked up a yellow card, albeit a harsh one, late in the game. While he would have liked to focus on the game, Burn was asked about Alexander Isak’s move to Liverpool on deadline day. However, Burn looked calm throughout alongside Marc Guehi and then Ezri Konsa at the back.

With England picking up another three points in the World Cup qualifiers, here is how the national media rated Burn’s performance.

Burn has clearly earned the trust of Tuchel following his debut in March, which came just a few days after Newcastle’s historic Carabao Cup win.

Having played the full 90 against Andorra, he may be given a rest for England’s visit to Serbia on Tuesday night. Burn can no doubt play another game over the next few days, but with Tuchel still only nine months into his tenure, he may look to experiment a bit more with his starting XI.

Burn played alongside Elliot Anderson, who became the sixth Wallsend Boys Club graduate to play for England. Defensively, Andorra offered nothing, meaning Burn had a lot of time on the ball and showed off his passing capabilities.

Metro gave Burn a rating of 6/10 and said: “Quiet game for Burn with not much to do. His passing was solid though. Booked in the second half – although it was a little harsh from the referee.”

inews also rated Burn 6/10. They said: “Tuchel certainly seems to be a fan of the 33-year-old, who provides a left-footed option at centre-back. Difficult to assess his World Cup credentials when his three caps have come against Albania and Andorra (twice)”

The Mirror gave Burn a 6/10, saying: “Looked very comfortable and is clearly one of Tuchel’s favourites. Solid display.”

Finally, the Evening Standard confirmed a clean sweep of 6/10s for Burn by saying: “Had very little defensive work to do, but saw a lot of the ball when England were in possession. Solid and didn’t really put a foot wrong.”

Dan Burn could be in England World Cup squad if good form continues

Despite Sven Botman being back to full fitness and the summer signing of Malick Thiaw, head coach Eddie Howe has kept his faith in Burn and started him in all three of the Magpies’ Premier League games this season.

The Newcastle manager clearly has his favourites, and Burn is one of them. The defender was sensational last season, and his form has carried into the start of the 2025/26 campaign, keeping two clean sheets in the club’s first three games.

England are very likely to be in the World Cup, having won all four of their qualifying games, and if Burn can keep himself fit and ensure his form stays at the current level, he can be part of Tuchel’s squad on the plane to North America.

Tuchel picked Burn for his versatility, despite only playing him as a left-sided centre-back in his three appearances. The 33-year-old can cover as a left-back if needed.

It has been reported that Tuchel has taken a shine to Burn, so expect to see him in more England squads going forward.
