Tottenham target dissatisfied with his current situation at Real Madrid

Tottenham had identified Real Madrid attacker Brahim Diaz as an option to replace the injured James Maddison in Thomas Frank’s side

Tottenham Hotspur had targeted several players in the summer transfer window as they looked set for a massive rebuild under new boss Thomas Frank. They were keen to revamp the frontline and did well to bring in four attackers.

Spurs kicked off their transfer window by turning Mathys Tel’s loan from Bayern Munich into a permanent deal. Mohammed Kudus arrived from London rivals West Ham United in July. Not to everyone’s surprise, the north Londoners were keen on bringing in a new No.10 to address the gap created by James Maddison’s injury.

They suffered setbacks in their pursuit of Morgan Gibbs-White and Eberechi Eze, but eventually succeeded in landing one creative player in the shape of Xavi Simons. And on deadline day, Tottenham took advantage of negotiations breaking down between Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus for Randal Kolo Muani and signed the France forward on a season-long loan.

However, as per Football Insider senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke, Thomas Frank ‘regrets’ not signing an out-and-out No.10 as a replacement for Maddison.

Tottenham-linked Real Madrid attacker unhappy with his situation

As per reports from August, Spurs had Real Madrid attacker Brahim Diaz on their wishlist as an option to replace the injured Maddison in Frank’s roster.

The 26-year-old had a decent 2024/25 campaign at Real Madrid. He struggled for regular starts under former boss Carlo Ancelotti, and when Xabi Alonso was appointed as the new Real Madrid boss in May, there was hope things would change for the attacker. However, it has seemingly worsened for the Moroccan international.

According to Spanish outlet Fichajes, Brahim Diaz is unhappy with his situation at Real Madrid. Under new boss Xabi Alonso, he was expecting to have a leading role at the club, but the emergence of Franco Mastantuono has changed the scenario.

Franco Mastantuono has quickly become a key player for Alonso’s side after only arriving from River Plate in June. The teenager’s rise has relegated Brahim to the bench in the opening weeks of the new season. Brahim does not rule out changing the scenery if the situation at Santiago Bernabeu persists as he is aware that he is at the crucial juncture of his career and cannot continue to warm the benches.

The aforementioned report adds the Spanish-born attacker is already considering the possibility of entertaining offers in January if he does not get regular game time at Madrid in the upcoming months. However, it would be a tough decision for the 26-year-old to take as he enjoys a strong connection with the Madridistas.

Diaz’s future in Madrid is now at crossroads. Despite his talent and status as a Moroccan international, Alonso, with his team selections, has made it clear the 26-year-old does not feature prominently in his plans. After starting the first La Liga game of the new season against Osasuna, he has been limited to appearances from the bench in the following fixtures against Real Oviedo and RCD Mallorca.

From Tottenham’s perspective, Brahim could be the ideal January acquisition. With Frank seemingly unhappy with the lack of an out-and-out No.10 to replace the injured Maddison, a move for the Madrid man would make sense. The former Manchester City trainee brings experience at the highest level, having played over 250 games combined for Madrid and AC Milan. He has won the Premier League, Serie A, La Liga and the Champions League among several other trophies in his glittering career thus far.

Come January, the Lilywhites must certainly knock Madrid’s door for Brahim if his situation at Santiago Bernabeu does not change.
