The Eagles have waived offensive guard Kenyon Green, the team announced on Saturday afternoon.
Green didn’t make the original 53-man roster out of training camp, but he was added back to the 53 prior to Week 1. He was made inactive for Philadelphia’s 24-20 win over the Dallas Cowboys on Thursday.
Philadelphia acquired Green this offseason from the Houston Texans in the C.J. Gardner-Johnson trade. Some people thought Eagles offensive line coach Jeff Stoutland could turn around Green’s career, but it never happened.
He struggled to stay healthy this summer and got stuck with the third-team offensive line. The Eagles could still re-sign him to the practice squad.
With Green’s release, the Eagles have an open roster spot. General manager Howie Roseman could just promote a player from the practice squad.
But he could also sign another free agent to address an area of concern. He signed edge rusher Za’Darius Smith to a one-year deal on Friday to improve their pass rush depth. Smith had nine sacks last season and is a three-time Pro Bowler.
Could the Eagles add a cornerback to replace Adoree’ Jackson? That’s something to keep an eye on. Roseman can’t be happy with Jackson after Week 1. The nine-year veteran gave up five catches for 103 yards to Cowboys’ wide receivers.
The top free agent cornerbacks available are Stephon Gilmore and Kendall Fuller. He could pursue that avenue or make a trade at some point.
This open roster spot could also go to a fullback. Ben VanSumeren was ruled out for the year after tearing his patellar tendon on Thursday night’s opening kick off.
