As the 2025 NFL season kicks off, the San Francisco 49ers find themselves in a pivotal position to reclaim the NFC West title. NFL expert Bill Barnwell predicts that the team will bounce back from a disappointing 2024 season, which saw them finish with a 6-11 record. With a revamped roster and an easier schedule, the team looks poised to make a significant leap forward.
Barnwell emphasizes San Francisco’s potential for improvement, citing its history of bouncing back after tough seasons. The team was plagued by injuries last year, which contributed to their struggles. With key players returning to health and a new coaching staff led by Kyle Shanahan, the 49ers hope to regain their status as a perennial playoff contender.

The addition of capable offensive linemen and playmakers is expected to bolster the team’s performance. Quarterback Brock Purdy, who has signed a contract extension, will be essential to the team’s success as he navigates a restructured offense. If he can build on his previous experiences and stay healthy, San Francisco could return to its winning ways.
However, the division remains highly competitive, particularly with the Los Angeles Rams coming off a championship season. The 49ers will need to outperform their division rivals to secure a playoff spot. Analysts suggest that while the path is challenging, a healthier and more cohesive unit could give San Francisco the edge it needs.

San Francisco is predicted to have a great run by topping the NFC West division. This is detailed more in an analysis by Bill Barnwell for ESPN.
This season, the 49ers will instead face the easiest schedule in the league. I’m not sold on the idea that they have the same ceiling as the 2022 and 2023 teams because of how their core superstars have aged and some element of missing talent as a result of the Brock Purdy extension. But a healthier version of the team with Robert Saleh coaching up the defense should be a significant upgrade. If the Rams do take a step backward because of their own injuries, the 49ers would be the team best positioned to pounce.
As the season unfolds, San Francisco will face several key matchups that could define their playoff hopes. The team’s ability to adapt and capitalize on opportunities will be crucial as they seek to reclaim their divisional crown.

San Francisco possesses the tools and potential to make a strong playoff run in 2025. With the right adjustments and a commitment to excellence, they could very well return to the top of their division.
