In his first year as head football coach at Chambers High School, former Carolina Panthers’ fan favorite Captain Munnerlyn is making a difference.
Under Munnerlyn, Chambers is off to a 3-0 start, its best in five years, and this week, the two-time NCHSAA state champions join The Observer’s Sweet 16 poll.
Chambers beat Harding 31-0 Friday, after starting the season with a 35-34 win at Clover (S.C.) and a 34-17 win over Hopewell after that.
Clover beat Palisades at Palisades on Friday, 21-19, knocking the Pumas from No. 7 to No. 13 in The Sweet 16 this week. Hopewell had a real shot to beat No. 16 Statesville on Friday, before Statesville kicked a field goal with five minutes left to win 24-21.
Also new to the poll this week is Concord’s JM Robinson, which returns to the rankings. Since a 37-6 season-opening loss to Myers Park, Robinson has beaten West Cabarrus 42-10 on Aug. 29 and got a big win at Asheville’s AC Reynolds, 49-21, Friday night.
