Report: Newcastle United blocked late loan move for academy star who was keen to leave

Newcastle United reportedly blocked a late loan move for a young talent alongside William Osula’s Eintracht Frankfurt breakdown.

Deadline day was a very busy one for the Magpies, who only got a deal for Yoane Wissa over the line with 30 seconds to spare.

Elsewhere, Eddie Howe’s side were working hard on possible departures before the window closed. Trevan Sanusi and Travis Hernes left on loan, with the latter’s move to Groningen including an option to make the deal permanent.

Newcastle United almost loaned William Osula to Eintracht Frankfurt on deadline day, with an obligation to buy. However, the Dane will now stay on Tyneside as cover for Nick Woltemade and Wissa.

With the transfer window now closed, a new report has shared that another talented young player had a loan move blocked before the deadline.

Alex Murphy’s Newcastle United loan exit blocked before deadline day

21-year-old defender Alex Murphy is recognised as a talented young star in Newcastle’s academy. The Irishman made his debut in November 2023 late on during a 4-1 win against Chelsea at St James’ Park.

However, Murphy has had very few opportunities to impress since then.

Murphy was loaned to Bolton in January to gain more experience in the professional game. His time at the Toughsheet Community Stadium was mixed, with the Trotters failing to reach the playoffs with a couple of games left in the season.

According to a new report from the Chronicle, Murphy was hoping to go out on loan for the first half of the season on the final days of the transfer window. However, Matt Targett’s loan move to Middlesbrough effectively killed any chance of him going.

The report adds that there was more interest from League One during the summer transfer window, though no club was named.

Murphy moved up the pecking order due to Targett’s exit, so there is a better chance of him getting the first-team football he is hoping for.

Alex Murphy needed a loan move after pre-season performances for Newcastle United

Like seven others, Murphy was part of Newcastle’s list of academy players to feature in the squad for the pre-season tour of Asia.

Murphy played in three of Newcastle’s six pre-season games, failing to make much of an impact in any of them. The most difficult game was undoubtedly against Arsenal in Singapore, where he scored an own goal in a 3-2 defeat.

While he has moved up the pecking order on Tyneside, Murphy played in Newcastle U21s’ opening two games of the 2025/26 season, though they were beaten in both of them.

Murphy impressed against Celtic in pre-season. He just needs that one opportunity to prove to Howe that he has what it takes to become a star on Tyneside.
