Leeds United signed Sean Longstaff in the summer from Newcastle United for a deal worth £12m to bolster their midfield and add Premier League experience to a squad that had just been promoted from the Championship.
The midfielder didn’t get a chance to start in the first two Premier League games. However, injuries to Ao Tanaka and Ethan Ampadu brought the spotlight on him, and he was in the starting eleven against his former side and boyhood club Newcastle last weekend.

Longstaff showed the reasons why Leeds opted to bring him over other options, and was adjudicated the Man of the Match for his battling performance in the middle of the park in a 0-0 stalemate at Elland Road.
He has made it hard for Daniel Farke to drop him back to the bench, even if Ampadu and Tanaka are declared fit ahead of their trip to Craven Cottage to take on Fulham next weekend.

Newcastle legend Alan Shearer backs Sean Longstaff to do well at Leeds United
Longstaff seems to have settled quickly at Leeds, and his performance against Newcastle showed that he may not be easy to dislodge from the team.
Newcastle legend Alan Shearer believes Leeds have signed a solid person and a Premier League-proven midfielder from the Magpies in the last transfer window.
He is backing the midfielder to do well and has nothing but good things to say about a player who achieved his dream of playing for Newcastle before moving on.
The former striker understands why Longstaff moved on, as there are several quality midfielders ahead of him in the Newcastle squad.
“Everyone appreciated what he’s done for Newcastle, and Leeds have signed a really, really good lad”, Shearer said on The Rest is Football podcast.
“A talented lad who will do well, and I wish him well because, for a young boy coming through the ranks at Newcastle and achieving his dream like he has, it’s been great to watch.
“I understand why he wanted to leave and play first-team football. When Joelinton, [Sandro] Tonali and Bruno [Guimaraes] are all fit, there aren’t many, if any, better in the Premier League.”
