Eddie Howe take note as Newcastle United academy star wins award out on loan

Newcastle United have several talented young players out on loan following the closure of the summer transfer window.

This summer saw Eddie Howe and his peers take a more open approach to the players at the club, with some of the longstanding stars being moved on.

The likes of Sean Longstaff and Callum Wilson left Newcastle United, with the former joining the club as a youth player and spending 20 years on Tyneside.

Elsewhere, Newcastle’s academy sanctioned several loan moves before the transfer window closed. The biggest deals included Antonio Cordero joining KVC Westerlo and promising young winger Trevan Sanusi moving to FC Lorient for the 2025/26 season.

Another, more low-key move made by the club was sending 18-year-old goalkeeper Aidan Harris to Coleraine, who play in the Northern Ireland Premiership. Harris started well at his new club, and his form has since continued.

Newcastle United loanee Aidan Harris helps Coleraine go on an unbeaten run

Harris was listed in the Premier League’s next generation list in 2023, having played in the UEFA Youth League and made the bench for a Champions League game against AC Milan at the San Siro.

At just 18, a loan move was right for Harris at this point in his career, to get up to speed with the professional game and gain a better understanding of the tactical side of football.

Thankfully, Newcastle look like they are onto a winner with Harris, who has conceded just once in his first five appearances for Coleraine. The Northern Irish side are unbeaten in their first five games of the season, and have conceded just once during that time.

Harris picked up another clean sheet in Coleraine’s 4-0 win away at Crusaders FC on Saturday, meaning he has now conceded just once in an impressive seven hours of football.

Newcastle do not have a goalkeeper problem per se but Harris will be a great option for Howe going forward.

While there are many players out on loan, Harris is undoubtedly the standout star based on his form. Cordero has not started for Westerlo since his move, and it is too early to tell how Sanusi and Travis Hernes will perform.

Matt Targett’s move to Middlesbrough will have the most attention, especially after his assist on debut. However, fans should keep an eye on how Harris is performing.

Coleraine have taken note of his brilliant form, as Harris was the recipient of the club’s player of the month award for August.

With a fine start to September, Harris could win the same award this month if his form persists. The hope is that academy manager Steve Harper and the other appropriate individuals are keeping tabs on him and letting Howe know how well he is doing.
