Manchester United could still make more money from Antony next summer - and it could all be down to Liverpool
Manchester United had a relatively-successful transfer window as they were able to sign a number of their targets and offload the players who are no longer wanted at the club.
Brazilian winger Antony was one such player. The Brazilian joined from Ajax for £86m back in 2022 but failed to live up to the billing at Old Trafford and was sent on loan to Real Betis in January.
It was questionable if the sell-on clause would be worth anything given Antony’s performances during his time at United. However, the Red Devils could get the benefit of it within 12 months - and it could all be because of Premier League rivals Liverpool.
Antony reveals talks with Bayern Munich
Antony impressed more than just Real Betis with his performances for the La Liga club in the second half of last season. The player has revealed that he held talks with Bayern Munich about a move to Germany and an offer was even presented to him by the Bundesliga champions. He also insisted that over five clubs had been in contact with him about a move this summer.
He said: “I spoke with Bayern Munich. I don’t know if it was [a] €7 million [offer], but I said I had Betis’s word and that it was 95% certain and that I would respect my word. I feel comfortable making this decision because I’m very happy here. More than five teams called me.”
On his move back to Spain, he said: “What a difference! Seville is more beautiful than Manchester. I’m finally here. I spent more than 40 days in a hotel; it was very hard, but everyone knew I wanted to return to Betis.”
The interest in Antony from outside Real Betis should be music to United’s ears as they look to claw back some more money from the player’s potential future transfers.
Liverpool interest in Michael Olise could see Bayern Munich return for Antony
If Olise moves to Anfield, it leaves a gap in Bayern’s forward department that Antony could well be identified to fill. He is already on the club’s radar and if he picks up where he left off in Spain, there will undoubtedly be further interest in him come next summer.
At United, he scored 12 goals and provided five assists in 96 games. A chunk of those goals came against EFL opposition. Meanwhile at Betis, he netted nine times and provided five assists in 26 appearances across La Liga and the Europa Conference League.
A 50 per cent sell-on clause may look ambitious on the face of it, but next summer Bayern may be back in the market for a wide forward and that clause could suddenly become very valuable to the Red Devils. Let’s wait and see.
