Andre Onana is close to leaving Manchester United for Turkish side Trabzonspor, GMS understands. Talks are ongoing on Sunday to try and finalise an agreement, with Trabzonspor intent on formalising the move within 24 hours.
Onana was originally intent on staying at Old Trafford, and for much of the summer was not told his place as Manchester United's number one was under threat. But in recent days, Onana has been informed he is surplus to requirements following the arrival of Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp on Deadline Day.
Club-to-Club Agreement in Place for Onana to Leave Man Utd
Andre Onana in action for Manchester United
Ruben Amorim is content for Lammens, one of the brightest goalkeeping prospects in the game, and Altay Bayindir to compete for the No.1 spot, with Manchester United's recruitment team expected to reassess the situation in January. It is still possible a more experienced No.1 arrives in 2026, depending on how Lammens adapts, and another keeper is likely regardless, given Bayindir could also yet depart next year.
With Onana set to miss the entire festive period due to the Africa Cup of Nations with Cameroon, Amorim is set to give his other keepers opportunities. That has led Onana to reconsider staying at Old Trafford, with Manchester United prepared to sanction a loan. A club-to-club agreement is already in place with Trabzonspor.
Trabzonspor are in the market for a keeper after selling Ugurcan Cakir to Galatasaray in a deal worth over £30m. The Turkish transfer window is open until September 12, leaving plenty of time to find an agreement with Onana, but Trabzonspor are pushing to get the deal done quickly with the hope of having Onana available for their league fixture at Fenerbahce on September 15.
After sustaining a hamstring injury during the offseason, Onana's sole appearance this season was the EFL Cup loss to Grimsby Town. The 29 year-old has made 102 appearances since joining from Inter for £44m in 2023, but has struggled for consistency.
Manchester United had tried to make an ambitious loan move for Aston Villa's Emi Martinez earlier in the window, but they never made an offer for a permanent transfer despite considering doing so on Deadline Day. 23-year-old Lammens was instead seen as Premier League ready, and better value for money. Should Onana now depart, the Belgian will have immediate first-team opportunities.
