Eagles’ Jalen Carter spitting incident will test NFL’s ‘zero tolerance’ approach, insider says

Eagles defensive tackle Jalen Carter is waiting to see what type of punishment he will receive from the league after he was ejected for spitting at Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott during the Eagles’ 24-20 win. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Carter’s fate will be known very soon.

Schefter gave an update during the first “NFL Countdown” show of the regular season, saying there is uncertainty surrounding what will happen to Carter, but there is a chance he could avoid a suspension.

“During the spring league meeting, NFL executive vice president Troy Vincent warned coaches, GMs and executives that there would be, as one source recalled, zero tolerance for acts that demean the game and the league would come down hard on any violations,” Schefter said. “Now, we saw what happened Thursday night with Jalen Carter and Dak Prescott. The belief around the league is that Jalen Carter did serve time. He missed the entire game. The punishment in the past has been a fine. No player has been suspended. We’ll see how the league decides to handle this, but a ruling should come down Monday.”

Video from the NBC broadcast showed Prescott spitting in the vicinity of the Eagles huddle as trainers were attending to a knee injury suffered by Eagles fullback Ben VanSumeren on the opening kickoff. After he spat, he grinned. The two walked closer to each other, and Carter subsequently spat back at Prescott, which was seen by a nearby official who immediately threw a flag. Carter was ejected before playing a snap.

Carter apologized after the game and promised he would learn from the mistake. His ejection changed how the Cowboys offense attacked the Eagles defense. Prescott said they made adjustments to their game plan and blocking assignments because Carter was the focal point of their scheme. Dallas rushed for 121 yards and averaged 5.8 yards per carry through three quarters. The Eagles defense ultimately held up in the fourth quarter, allowing no points despite the Cowboys moving the ball.
