A surprising trend has emerged in recent years that many San Antonio Spurs fans never would have expected. After decades of dynasties, the NBA officially has parity, with there being a different champion in each of the last seven seasons.
This despite the Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers having combined to win 35 of the 78 NBA championships. The Spurs even have five, making them the only mid-market dynasty in the NBA.
They have assembled a fantastic collection of young players headlined by [superstar Victor Wembanyama](https://airalamo.com/victor-wembanyama-single-handedly-spurs-offseason-best-nba). Therefore, it's fair to wonder if this Spurs team can break the recent trend of a new champion every year by creating another dynasty.
The Spurs could be a threat to the NBA's newfound parity
--------------------------------------------------------
While the Spurs have dynasty aspirations, they may have to get in line. The Oklahoma City Thunder was the youngest team in the NBA last season but still managed to win their first NBA championship. Headlined by league and NBA Finals MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, the sky could be the limit for them.
They will also have to contend with the Houston Rockets, who won 52 games last season and got much better. Still, if Wembanyama emerges as a top-5 player and De'Aaron Fox is an all-star caliber player next season, then the Spurs could be in the mix.
Better still, if Stephon Castle makes a big sophomore leap in his second season, the Spurs could be the Houston Rockets of this season. That would be huge. Just taking them from 34 wins last season to at least 50 games would signal to the rest of the NBA that they've arrived.
The Spurs have all the makings to be the next NBA dynasty
---------------------------------------------------------
They also have Dylan Harper, who has "star" written all over him, and Carter Bryant, who projects to be a starting small forward who can be an elite defender. Few teams have been able to build a roster full of so much young talent and have a top young player with so much potential.
If everything goes right, the Spurs could absolutely be a contender that matches up favorably against the Thunder and Rockets. Considering how much worse the Eastern Conference is, if they can get past those teams, then San Antonio could absolutely have the makings of a dynasty, but that's a big if.
Ultimately, the Spurs have the potential to end the NBA's newfound parity by winning multiple championships. That's far easier said than done, but it's possible.
