There was a time when Newcastle United had to rely on their home form to ensure Premier League survival. In the dark old days before the takeover, wins on the road felt like a rare treat, with the thousands of travelling fans often returning home without the points.

That all changed under Eddie Howe. While St James' Park remains a fortress on which cup runs and league form is built, Newcastle no longer travel in fear.

They ended their long Old Trafford hoodoo with not one, but two wins in the famous stadium, have won at the likes of Arsenal and Tottenham and came within a scandalous penalty decision of beating Paris Saint-Germain on their own turf.

Granted, Anfield, the Etihad and Stamford Bridge have been largely impenetrable, but United no longer travel with an inferiority complex.

However, a return to those bad old days is threatening to hamper Newcastle if they're not careful.

Newcastle have not won away from home since a 3-0 victory over doomed Leicester City way back on April 7. Of course the summer break means not too many matches have passed since then, but the run now stands at five Premier League away days without a win.

What's perhaps more concerning is that United have scored just twice in those five games, and one of them was from the penalty spot against Brighton last term.

Of course we know the reasons for the lack of firepower this season. Unted were the better side in both games at Aston Villa and Leeds United this term, but didn't have the cutting edge in front of goal.

The arrival of Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa should, hopefully, address that.

It was not very long ago that United's away form was scintilating. Only last winter they had successive wins at Ipswich (4-0), Man United (2-0), Tottenham (2-1) and Arsenal (2-0).

However, after than incredible run, they only won at Southampton and Leicester - both sides who would go on to be relegated.

There is the small matter of the Carabao Cup success at Wembley of course. It may be neutral ground but it certainly can be classed as an 'away' game, even for both sides.

It's not a cause for alarm just yet, but with Bournemouth, Uniion Saint Gilloise and Brighton on the horizon, it's a habit Howe will be keen doesn't creep into his squad.
