Commanders' under-the-radar pickup can’t escape one stubborn flaw

The Washington Commanders take on the New York Giants to kick off their 2025 season on Sunday, from the friendly confines of Northwest Stadium in Landover, Md.

Entering the season, one of the biggest storylines to monitor in Washington was how the Commanders' revamped defensive line would fare. It has been viewed as a concern throughout the summer, despite the high-priced new addition of Javon Kinlaw.

Additionally, the Commanders signed veteran defensive end Deatrich Wise Jr. In his first regular-season showing, the nine-year NFL journeyman has been quite visible — for both positive and negative reasons.

During the Commanders' second preseason game against the Cincinnati Bengals, the only preseason contest in which Washington's starters saw significant playing time, Wise picked up two face mask penalties. It's a trend that has continued into Week 1, with the longtime New England Patriot being flagged on fourth down with the Giants at the goal line.

It was a debatable call, but thankfully one that only cost Washington three points in the end as the Giants were unable to punch the ball into the end zone. Inexplicably, after going for it from the three-yard line, Brian Daboll elected to kick a field goal after the next set of downs.

For Wise, his overall production has been impressive despite the penalty. He and the rest of the Commanders' much-maligned unit have generated pressure early and often on Russell Wilson.

Wise has been a productive player throughout his career, accumulating 34 sacks in his first eight seasons. The Commanders didn't bring him in to be a star, but he can be a quality supporting piece who can help Washington's defensive front stay afloat. All he needs to do is stop grabbing face masks.
