Tuchel claims Gunners stars "struggled" as Arteta faces Premier League dilemma

England boss Thomas Tuchel criticised Arsenal duo Eberechi Eze and Noni Madueke after the nation's 2-0 win against Andorra on Saturday.

The Gunners were among the Premier League's biggest spenders in the summer, with their total outlay just short of £250m.

Manager Mikel Arteta has focused on strengthening his options in attack, adding the likes of Eze and Madueke to his squad.

The duo were part of the England team that beat Andorra on the weekend, but the Three Lions boss has was not particularly impressed by their respective displays.

Speaking to reporters after the victory, Tuchel said: "We missed the little moments to accelerate the game. Maybe [Eze] had not his best day in the number 10 position. He trained so well. In the decision-making, struggled a little bit. The last pass from Noni was not clinical enough."

Madueke completed the full game against Andorra from the right side of attack, while Eze played as an attacking midfielder for 78 minutes before being substituted.

How can Arteta get the best out of Eberechi Eze, Noni Madueke?

Tuchel's comments have raised questions about how Arteta might get the best out of them in the rest of 2025-26.

Eze predominantly played behind a central striker for Crystal Palace from the left, but he operated as one of two supportive players.

The Englishman could be given minutes on the left flank, but Arteta has often asked his left-winger to stay wide, and such a role would arguably limit the impact he could have in the middle of the pitch.

If the Arsenal boss asked left-back Riccardo Calafiori to consistently overlap, perhaps Eze would then have the freedom to create from central areas.

Madueke is capable of operating in various positions, but he has so far been utilised on the left by the Gunners, whereas he had played from the right for previous club Chelsea.

The forward will almost certainly be relegated to a squad role now that Eze has been signed, with the winger likely to deputise on both wings.

Should Arsenal win the 2025-26 Premier League title?

It is difficult to say that Arsenal should be seen as favourites to win the title considering champions Liverpool spent more than £400m in the summer transfer window.

However, many supporters and pundits suggested that the Londoners fell short of the Merseysiders last season due to their lack of creativity, as well as their lack of an elite striker.

Number nine Viktor Gyokeres was signed from Sporting Lisbon, while Eze was one of the Premier League's most impressive attackers in 2024-25.

If Arteta fails to secure the title once again, he would not be able to argue that a lack of funding held him back, and questions may have to be asked about his long-term future at the Emirates.
