Steelers open the season with 34-32 win over Jets

The Jets opened the scoring with a 35-yard field goal by Nick Folk to cap their first drive. Breece Hall ripped off an 18-yard run on his first carry as the Jets advanced to the Pittsburgh 19. But a tackle by Alex Highsmith, a tackle-for-loss by T.J. Watt, and a tackle by Patrick Queen forced the Jets to kick the field goal with 9:15 left in the opening quarter.

The Steelers answered with Rodgers' first touchdown pass with the Steelers, a 22-yard play-action throw to a wide open Skowronek for his first touchdown with the Steelers. It put the Steelers ahead 7-3 with 3:38 left in the first.

The Jets answered with a 33-yard touchdown pass from Justin Fields to Garrett Wilson. Because of a Steelers formation penalty on the missed kick, the Jets attempted a two-point conversion, but Braelon Allen was stopped and the Jets took their 9-7 lead into the second quarter.

Boswell followed with his 56-yarder to put the Steelers ahead 10-9 with 13:26 left in the first half. The key play of the drive was a 31-yard Rodgers screen pass to Metcalf.

The offensive show by both teams continued as the Jets answered with another touchdown, an 8-yard run by Allen with 10:09 left in the half. The extra point put the Jets ahead, 16-10.

The Jets then forced the first Steelers punt of the game, and took advantage with a 51-yard field goal by Folk. The kick extended the Jets' lead to 19-10 with 2:54 remaining in the half.

Rodgers ended the wild first half with a 3-yard touchdown pass to Jonnu Smith with 32 seconds left to cut the Jets' lead to 19-17. The touchdown was set up by a 21-yard Rodgers pass to Austin, who rose up to make a back-shoulder catch at the New York 3. From there, Smith jet-motioned right and caught the flip from Rodgers behind the line. He followed blocks by Warren and Freiermuth for the touchdown.

Defenses settled down in the third quarter, but the Jets widened their lead to 26-17 on their second possession with Fields' 2-yard touchdown sneak.

The Steelers then scored their two touchdowns within 50 seconds thanks to the fumbled kickoff return, and held on with the big plays by Rodgers, Boswell, and Ramsey.

It was the second consecutive game in which Rodgers threw 4 touchdown passes.

On the other side, Fields completed 16 of 22 for 218 yards, a touchdown, and a 119.1 passer rating. He also rushed for 2 touchdowns in gaining 48 yards on the ground. Hall of the Jets led all rushers with 107 yards on 19 carries as the Jets compiled 182 yards on the ground at a clip of 4.7 yards per carry.

For the Steelers, Metcalf caught 4 passes for 83 yards to lead the offensive output.
