LANDOVER, Md. — The Giants’ Russell Wilson-led offense sputtered early in Sunday’s season-opening game at the Commanders.
Coach Brian Daboll’s team, with offensive coordinator Mike Kafka calling plays again, didn’t get on the board (with a field goal) until 13:57 remained in the second quarter. That cut Washington’s lead to 7-3.
As that quarter began, and the Commanders led 7-0, Fox Sports’ cameras showed Giants star wide receiver Malik Nabers yelling at Daboll on the sideline. About what, it’s not clear, though Daboll was yelling, too.
A few moments later, during a break in the action, Daboll tried to encourage Nabers by approaching him, saying something in a calm manner and offering a low-five. Nabers either ignored it or didn’t see it. So Daboll then patted Nabers on the chest. That’s where Fox’s clip ended.
The Giants desperately need Nabers to ignite their offense this season, regardless of whether Wilson or first-round rookie Jaxson Dart winds up starting most of their games at quarterback.
It looks like the Giants — who went 3-14 last year and 6-11 in 2023 — could be on their way to an 0-1 start in 2025. The Commanders, who reached the NFC Championship Game in 2024, lead 14-3 with 6:14 remaining in the first half.
If this holds up, Daboll and Nabers will have plenty more to be upset about.
