“We Have To Do Better” Giants HC Brian Daboll Makes Russell Wilson Decision After Loss To…

The New York Giants dropped their first game of the season to the Washington Commanders 6-21. The lack of offense for New York was frustrating all afternoon. Russell Wilson was acquired this off-season and immediately given the starting job.

After the loss, Daboll had some things to say.

On Sunday, the New York Giants began their 2025 season with a disappointing performance against the Washington Commanders:

Head coach Brian Daboll and the Giants failed to score a touchdown and fell to the Commanders 21-6. Quarterback Russell Wilson, who is now in his 14th year in the NFL, struggled mightily in his Giants debut.

Wilson signed a one-year, $10.5 million contract with the Giants during the offseason to be the team’s starting signal caller. However, with New York taking former Ole Miss Rebels quarterback Jaxson Dart 25th overall in the 2025 NFL Draft, there is some uncertainty in the position group.

After the game, Daboll had an emphatic response when asked if Russell Wilson would be the starter next week.

After the game, Daboll had an emphatic response when asked if Russell Wilson would be the starter next week.

“I have confidence in Russ,” Daboll said, per ESPN’s Jordan Raanan. “We have to do better around… overall.”

This confidence in Wilson may come as a surprise to Giants fans who saw their starting quarterback’s rough outing. He went 17-of-37 passing for 168 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions. He also ran the ball eight times for 44 yards, which led the team.

Some of Wilson’s struggles were undoubtedly due to the time he had to throw the ball. The Commanders generated 22 pressures on 45 dropbacks, according to NFL analyst Ryan Fowler, converting two of them into sacks.

Although Daboll publicly gave Wilson a vote of confidence after the game, the question remains as to when and if Dart will see the field sometime this season.
