The Las Vegas Raiders opened the 2025 NFL season with a 1-0 record following their Week 1 victory over the New England Patriots on Sunday at Gillette Stadium. Jakobi Meyers, facing his former team, made an immediate impact.
Meyers finished with eight receptions for 97 yards, while Geno Smith completed 24 of 34 passes for 362 yards and one touchdown. Although the offense showed glimpses of its potential, the Raiders might still be looking for another receiver.
Las Vegas signed Amari Cooper before his retirement, so even after a Week 1 win, the Silver and Black could be exploring ways to strengthen their receiving corps.Pro Football Rumors’ Adam La Rose writes that the Raiders could dip into the free agent market again and sign veteran Tyler Boyd.
“Tyler Boyd remains unsigned with Week 1 kicking off around the NFL,” La Rose wrote. “The veteran wideout could be the target of at least one suitor, however. The Raiders lost a receiving option days before the start of the season when Amari Cooper retired.
“The five-time Pro Bowler had recently signed with Vegas, but his return to the franchise provedto be very short-lived. In the wake of Cooper’s retirement, questions were raised about a veteran addition taking place.”
Raiders Can Easily Afford Tyler Boyd
Boyd’s best years came with the Cincinnati Bengals from 2016 to 2023, which included reaching the Super Bowl in 2022. Last season, Boyd played for the Tennessee Titans, but it was a forgettable one-year stint as he only recorded 39 receptions, the second-lowest ever of his career.
As a result, Boyd would likely want to sign for a potential playoff contender, which the Raiders can be if the teamplay as they did in Week 1. Still, the team could use receiver help.
“Vegas was, to no surprise, led in the passing game by wideout Jakobi Meyers and tight end Brock Bowers on Sunday,” La Rose added. “The Raiders also have Tre Tucker along with rookies Jack Bech and Dont’e Thornton and Shorter in place at the receiver spot. With roughly $25MM in cap space, the team could certainly afford a low-cost Boyd investment. It will be interesting to see if team and player explore a signing.”
Are There Any Interested Teams in Tyler Boyd?
In the offseason, Boyd, who recorded 513 receptions, 6,000 receiving yards, and 31 touchdowns during his eight seasons with the Bengals, did reportedly have interest from the Pittsburgh Steelers. Nonetheless, that didn’t lead to the team signing him.
“The Pennsylvania native and Pitt alum made it known he would welcome a contract with his hometown Steelers, and thatfeeling was mutual,” La Rose wrote. “No agreement was reached, however, with Pittsburgh preferring to look in-house for complementary receiving options.
“Boyd has not been linked to any teams since his Steelers interest emerged, but the Raiders could present him with an opportunity as an experienced depth piece.”
Boyd would bring valuable veteran experience to a Raiders team that wants to be a playoff contender, and the receiver can lend a hand in that matter. It will be interesting to see if Las Vegas does replace Cooper in-house or if a veteran free agent, like Boyd, makes more sense.
