Chelsea forward Joao Pedro endured a worrying moment during Brazil’s 3-0 World Cup qualifying victory over Chile at the Maracana Stadium, vomiting on the pitch after a heavy collision with Arsenal winger Gabriel Martinelli.
The incident occurred in the 18th minute when both players chased a loose ball inside the Chilean penalty area and clashed head-on. Pedro, 23, was left visibly shaken, collapsing briefly before receiving urgent medical attention.
He was seen vomiting on the turf, sparking concern among fans and teammates, but was cleared to continue and remained on the pitch until the 71st minute.

Despite the scare, the Chelsea striker contributed to Brazil’s dominant display, playing a key role in the build-up to Estevao’s opening goal. Speaking after the match, Pedro downplayed the incident: “I was following the action, I was running to try to catch the ball. When I looked ahead, Martinelli was there. We collided, and I received a blow to the stomach. I felt a little bad, but I was calm afterwards.”

Brazil went on to secure an emphatic victory thanks to goals from Estevao, Lucas Paqueta, and Bruno Guimaraes, cementing their place among the early frontrunners in South American qualifying. Pedro, earning his fourth senior cap, was substituted for Kaio Jorge in the 71st minute, while Martinelli also made way for Paqueta.

Pedro’s form has been one of the bright spots of Chelsea’s early season under Enzo Maresca. Since completing a £60 million switch from Brighton, he has scored twice and provided two assists in his first three Premier League appearances. Maresca will now be keeping a close eye on his fitness as Chelsea prepare for the league’s resumption.
Brazil face Bolivia on September 10 in their next qualifier, with Pedro expected to feature again if fully fit. For both the Selecao and Chelsea, his growing influence as a dynamic, hard-working forward is becoming increasingly clear.
