Everton reeling as West Brom starlet breaks long-standing record on international duty

West Bromwich Albion midfielder Isaac Price has broken a record on international duty.

Isaac Price scored a cracker in Cologne on Sunday night as Northern Ireland were beaten 3-1 by Germany in the FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Price, West Brom’s top Championship scorer so far this season with three in four matches, has continued his fine form on the international stage. The versatile attacking midfielder was unable to score in last Thursday’s 3-1 win away at 10-man Luxembourg but he netted emphatically against the Germans to round off the weekend.

Beating goalkeeper Oliver Baumann with what was Northern Ireland’s only shot on target of the night, Price thrashed in on the volley in the 34th minute. The Albion gem cancelled out Serge Gnabry’s opener with a clinical strike as he peeled away at the far post to connect with Justin Devenny’s deep corner.

Isaac Price breaks Northern Ireland record

The goal in Germany was Price’s tenth for the Green and White Army, enough to break a long-standing record. Price, aged just 21, has become the youngest ever player to score 10 goals for Northern Ireland. It’s a squad with some exciting talents in Devenny, Conor Bradley, Trai Hume and co, but Price is emerging as perhaps the most clinical of the lot.

It’s not the only record Price has broken for his country. Back in October, the midfielder became the youngest Northern Irishman to score a hat-trick in an international fixture as ‘Norn Iron’ thrashed Bulgaria 5-0. He’s developed quite the knack for scoring for his nation.

Price doesn’t have too long to wait to impress for Northern Ireland again as the next international break is in October, before yet another in November. The Green and White Army take on Slovakia on October 10 before hosting Germany three days later. The final World Cup qualifiers are then away at Slovakia and at home to Luxembourg in November.

Everton must rue Price blunder

West Brom paid just £2.5 million to sign Price from Standard Liege in January and that is already turning out to be a bargain fee. The 21-year-old is already one of the most influential players under Ryan Mason and supporters, knowing this is surely just the beginning of Price’s road to reaching his full potential, are getting giddy.

Everton, who let Price leave for Liege for free back in 2023, must surely be reeling at a missed opportunity. A lack of creativity has been one of the Toffees’ biggest pitfalls in recent seasons and Price could have perhaps helped change that if he were given game time assurances on Merseyside.

David Moyes’ side have started the new campaign well with two wins in three Premier League games, so Price or no Price probably wouldn’t have had much of an impact just now. But losing an academy product for free and then seeing him tear it up for both club and country must have the Toffees reeling, at least a little.
