After failing to impress at Old Trafford, Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has allowed Andre Onana to leave this summer, albeit on a season-long loan to Trabzonspor. But why is the goalkeeper, who arrived from Inter Milan in 2023, poised to earn double while at the Turkish Super Lig outfit?
Confirmed by Fabrizio Romano, the Cameroonian has green-lit his switch from England to Turkey. In turn, Amorim – widely regarded as one of the best young managers in world football – is left with the toss-up of Altay Bayindir and Senne Lammens.
Onana, viewed as the long-term replacement for David de Gea, was highly thought of upon his arrival from Italy in the summer of 2023. Things haven’t panned out as expected for the 29-year-old – and he’s now fallen out of favour under Amorim, as evidenced by his zero Premier League minutes in 2025/26.

Back then, Erik ten Hag – who had worked with the shot-stopper previously at Ajax – wanted someone inbetween the sticks that was cool and collected with the ball at their feet. Champions League-level at the time, Onana was identified and subsequently signed for a fee around the £43 million mark.
This summer, following the announcement of Lammens, United’s higher-ups informed Onana that he could move onto pastures new; and thanks to the Turkish transfer window remaining open until 12 September, he’s now reportedly on the move.
As reported by Romano, the initially tentative 48-cap Cameroon international has now agreed to move. There is no buy option or loan fee included in the contract – but why, despite his poor performances, is he poised to earn ‘almost double’ in Trabzon?
According to a report from The Athletic, Fatih Tekke’s Trabzonspor side – who are yet to lose a league game four games into the 2025/26 season – have agreed to cover his salary in full, while Onana is also set to earn extra due to added bonuses.
Compared to his weekly take-home in Manchester, The Athletic have reported that ‘sources close to the player' say he will earn almost double for Trabzonspor, who are outside the traditional juggernauts of football in Turkey, such as Fenerbahce. Elsewhere, talkSPORT understands that Onana, who has played 102 times for United since his arrival, will earn more than double due to the signing-on fee and bonuses.
And it is Fenerbahce who Onana could make his debut against. Upon returning from the September international break, the three-time Eredivisie champion will look to dislodge Ugurcan Cakir from his starting spot between the sticks.

Onana missed United’s pre-season tour due to a hamstring injury – and since, he’s made just one appearance. That was when Grimsby Town’s giant-killing rocked the footballing world and the Red Devils were knocked out of the Carabao Cup.
Incredibly, Onana – who has seldom filled the Old Trafford faithful with confidence – returned from the summer break with a pay rise demand, of which he felt that he was deserving. Understandably, that stance did not go down well with United head coach Amorim.
