Burnley confirmed their progression to the knockout stages of the FA Women’s National League Cup with an emphatic 6-0 victory over Huddersfield Town on Sunday afternoon.

Charlie Chadwick and Aimee Kelly both netted braces alongside further strikes from Heidi Logan and Brooke Cairns on a damp but successful day in Leyland.

There were nine changes to the side that beat Loughborough Lightning in the league last week, with captain Tilly Wilkes and fellow defender Emma Siddall the two players to keep their place.

Eva Spencer kept goal as she did in the last cup match, with Abbey-Leigh Stringer and Cairns holding the fort in midfield behind a strike pairing of Logan and Chadwick.

Chadwick’s tap in from a yard opened the scoring after just five minutes and it was 2-0 soon afterwards, with Cairns finishing a loose ball in the area well.

Logan then scored Burnley’s third with 11 minutes on the clock. The striker picked out the bottom left corner after being unselfishly picked out by Chadwick.

Lou Roberts’ side controlled the ball for the entirety of the first half and Chadwick’s second, which was another well-taken finish into the top right corner, made it 4-0 nine minutes before the break.

The second half started in a similar vein, with Chadwick and Robinson both working Huddersfield ‘keeper Bethan Davies before the hour mark.

Felicity Jones almost found a consolation for the visitors, but her cross from the right cannoned off the bar and away.

Roberts made a triple change in the 60th minute, withdrawing the three goal scorers Logan, Chadwick and Cairns for Danielle Maxwell, Kelly, and Louise McDaniel respectively.

More switches saw Brenna McPartlan and Charley Docherty replace Wilkes and Siddall before McDaniel almost netted her first Burnley goal but was denied by a flying save.

Kelly then struck twice in two minutes to put the cherry on top of a determined team display.

Her first was a cool one-on-one finish from Millie Chandarana’s reverse pass, and the Liverpudlian did well to intercept a loose pass and pick out the bottom right corner for her second and Burnley’s sixth.

The Clarets are top of FAWNL Cup Group T with six points from their two matches ahead of a final group match against Blackburn Rovers on Sunday 28th September.

Roberts and her players now turn their attention back to the league with a trip to Sporting Khalsa on Sunday 14th September. Kick-off is 2pm.
