Quirk's brace sees Cherries continue unbeaten run with cup win over Moneyfields

The display could have easily seen the Cherries score four or five, but Sophie Quirk’s two goals were enough to secure the win against last season’s title rivals.

Moneyfields struggled to break down a strong defence, with their biggest chance arguably coming in the first minute of the game, when Katie Scadding was forced into a quick stop down low to her left.

Bournemouth then quickly grew into the game, as Quirk forced two saves from the goalkeeper, as well as a one-on-one opportunity, before she deservedly got her goal in the 12th minute.

Georgia Wilson played Quirk through, as she burst past the Moneyfields centre-back and slotted home across goal.

Moneys did cause some issues, largely from set-pieces. An interesting routine from their right-hand-side corners saw the number nine making decoy runs, whilst ex-Cherry Ali Hall delivered a couple of dangerous crosses from the other side.

The home side began the second-half rapidly, as Amber Treweek played Quirk in behind with a long pass down the left.

The forward used her pace again to beat the defender and cut inside before finishing at the near post in the 47th minute. She almost had a third just two minutes later, as Hannah Haughton was forced into a great save in the top-left corner.

Quirk continued to wreak havoc, with two more dangerous crosses at the byline, and a chance to run through on goal that was thwarted when her shirt was pulled.

With interim boss Bleazard making substitutions in the 62nd and 74th minutes, the opportunities slowed down somewhat, before an excellent corner from Katie James was nodded in by Jessica Hennessy at the near post in the 87th.

However, the goal was ruled out by the referee, and Moneyfields quickly restarted play whilst Bournemouth celebrated. Their fast break was met with a chorus of boos from the crowd, though it was unsuccessful.

The 2-0 scoreline could have easily been more, but Bournemouth’s speed in transition was evident and effective. Their pressing forced mistakes and turnovers, and the team’s physicality (particularly from skipper Abby Jones) was very impressive.
