Luis Suarez replacement? Three MLS clubs that could consider Leeds icon Patrick Bamford - opinion

Patrick Bamford remains on the lookout for a new club after Leeds United mutually terminated his contract, and reports say the Elland Road icon has picked his next destination.

Having been told by Daniel Farke early in pre-season that he would not be a part of the German’s plans in the Premier League, Leeds and Bamford chose to end his contract a year before it was due to expire.

It comes after Wrexham ruled out a move for Bamford, and a reunion at Middlesbrough was never on the cards. Middlesbrough have made a brilliant start to the Championship season under boss Rob Edwards.

Celtic held talks to sign Bamford after deadline day. But, Brendan Rodgers chose to form a reunion with his old Leicester striker Kelechi Iheanacho, and now, Bamford is eyeing a move to America and the MLS.

Three MLS clubs that could consider Patrick Bamford signing

Bamford’s preference to join an MLS side will come as no surprise. In the last few months, Bamford has made it clear he would love to play in the MLS, having turned down a scholarship at Harvard University.

With Bamford now 32 and looking for a home for the final few years of his injury-ravaged career, a move across the pond makes sense. Below, are three clubs that could consider signing Bamford on a free.

Luis Suarez replacement at Inter Miami after spitting incident

It will come as no shock to hear Luis Suarez has just been banned for six games for spitting. The Inter Miami veteran spat at a Seattle Sounders staff member, in the Leagues Cup final earlier this month.

The six-game ban is for Leagues Cup games, though the MLS could also place a ban on Lionel Messi’s teammate. A mega move to David Beckham’s Miami could happen if Suarez receives further punishment.

Dean Smith rivalry put to bed alongside Wilfried Zaha

Bamford was front and centre during the incident that saw Leeds score a controversial goal against Dean Smith’s Aston Villa. Bamford faked a blow to the face from Anwar El Ghazi, and got the winger sent off.

Marcelo Bielsa forced his Leeds side to allow Albert Adomah to score a goal, earning the FIFA Fairplay Award. Smith is now in charge at Charlotte and has since signed Bamford’s old Palace teammate Zaha.

Charlotte have also just sold United States striker Patrick Agyemang to Derby County, meaning they are in the market for a replacement and Bamford could come in, if he and Smith can put aside their rivalries.

Jesse Marsch’s assistant Chris Armas at Colorado Rapids

Over at Colorado, Chris Armas has just signed Rob Holding. Armas was brought to Leeds by Marsch not long before his sacking, though the American coach remained alongside Michael Skubala in the dugout.

Bamford is believed to have been a fan of the coaching setup post-Marsch’s sacking, and a reunion with Armas in Colorado could well be an option. Plenty of MLS clubs would surely love to sign Bamford.
