Liverpool and Man City are amongst a group of clubs interested in the same Premier League star.

Manchester City’s transfer window was relatively uncontroversial this summer, as they made their additions fairly quickly and without incident or competition. However, since the window has closed, new developments have emerged, looking ahead to January.

It hasn’t been a great start to the new season for Pep Guardiola, as his side have lost two of their opening three games. However, Guardiola will be looking ahead to the next transfer window to get one over on title rivals Liverpool. One way that they could do this is by hijacking their attempt to sign Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace.

City are reportedly keen on Guehi, and will consider a move for him in the January transfer window, despite it looking almost inevitable that he would join Liverpool. However, the Reds remain confident of signing the England international.

Liverpool thinks Man City’s Guehi interest is a ‘bluff’

His contract expires in the summer, and Liverpool plan to wait it out and sign him for free, but amid the Man City interest, would they still take that risk? According to a report by The Telegraph, Liverpool will wait until the end of the season to try and sign Guehi, as they reportedly believe that the other clubs’ interest in the player is simply a ‘bluff’ to try and get them to dip into their pockets in January.

They failed to sign him for £35m in the summer transfer window, which was seemingly the last time they will enter into negotiations with Palace over a deal for the centre-back before he becomes a free agent. The move was agreed before Palace pulled the plug at the 11th hour.

Where does Guehi want to go?

During the transfer window, it had been reported that Guehi was very keen on a move to Anfield, and that remains to be the case. The same report by the Telegraph states that Guehi was ‘excited’ at the prospect of joining Liverpool, and that around Anfield, there is a lot of sympathy for him because his ‘dream’ move never materialised. He also ‘sees his long-term future’ at Anfield.

The player himself has been very quiet over all the transfer gossip surrounding him, not suggesting a preference to Liverpool over City, and also not coming out and saying that he explicitly wants to leave Palace.

He is currently away on international duty with England and will no doubt be trying to focus on his football, but it seems as though many clubs around him are plotting their moves ahead of the January window, whether Liverpool believes it or not.

If Guehi was open to joining Man City, Guardiola could swoop in ahead of Liverpool in January and sign him, especially as the Reds have said they will wait until he’s available as a free agent.
