Arsenal handed boost in pursuit of £52m Manchester United target after 'last-gasp move'

Arsenal are reportedly in a strong position to sign Stuttgart midfielder Angelo Stiller, particularly after Manchester United's last-minute bid for the German player fell through this summer. Stiller is widely regarded as one of the top midfielders available and, unsurprisingly, has been linked with numerous teams across Europe.

The 24-year-old was notably associated with Liverpool as well as United in the most recent transfer window, with the latter thought to have made a significant move for him in the final hours of the window. Caught Offside reports that United tried to bring Stiller into their squad to bolster their midfield.

However, it is understood that both the player and his team rejected their advances. United are also said to have explored the possibility of activating a £27.8m release clause.

But these attempts were also unsuccessful as that clause is only applicable in certain windows. Instead, it is believed that the Bundesliga club would demand £52m before they would consider selling Stiller.

With United's bid rebuffed, the Gunners are now seen as the frontrunners to secure the German international's signature. Mikel Arteta's project is thought to appeal to Stiller as it prioritises young talent and offers regular playing opportunities.

However, the midfielder is reportedly not in a hurry to leave Stuttgart. Stiller's talents have caught the attention of clubs beyond the Premier League too.

Bayern Munich, where he played from 2010 to 2021, are reportedly keeping tabs on the midfielder. Real Madrid are also believed to be informally interested in Stiller, while Barcelona have added him to their shortlist.

Barca's financial difficulties could pose a challenge when it comes to signing players for substantial fees though. As for the Gunners, it would be intriguing to see if Stiller would be keen on moving there or not.

Arteta's team signed Martin Zubimendi in the summer transfer window so it is unclear if Stiller's game time would be as regular should he move to north London. United would likely offer Stiller more opportunities considering they are in need of a more conclusive overhaul of the squad.
