Brock Purdy didn't exactly justify massive contract in 49ers' Week 1 win

The San Francisco 49ers came into Lumen Field against the Seattle Seahawks in Week 1 ready for a battle.

Despite winning 17-13, the team leaves with a little bit less, perhaps.

In a battle of two of the three NFC West teams that missed the playoffs, the Niners have already matched their wins total within the division from last year. To be fair, their only victory within the NFC West in 2024 was also on the road against the Seahawks.

With a revamped roster on both sides of the ball and their starting quarterback, Brock Purdy, locked up for many seasons to come, San Francisco was poised for a big game from the face of its franchise.

Instead, the five-year, $265 million contract by the 49ers went from a steal to a bad deal.

In Week 1, Purdy's 2025 season debut fell a bit flat given the expectations for San Francisco. After all, the 49ers did make two Super Bowls in four years after missing the playoffs altogether last season.

Where did Brock Purdy struggle for the 49ers?

Mr. Irrelevant from the 2022 NFL Draft has become a household name, especially in the Bay Area. The quarterback had a pair of second-half turnovers against the Seahawks on Sunday.

At that point, San Francisco trailed Seattle by three points. The first interception was inside the Seahawks' 40-yard line. A completion of moving the chains on the play by the 49ers could have produced points.

In the game, Purdy missed multiple throws to his primary targets and wideouts Jauan Jennings and Ricky Pearsall. Outside of Pearsall and running back Christian McCaffrey, San Francisco's quarterback would have only thrown for 96 yards.

In 2024, even the Seahawks defense recorded 13 interceptions, which placed Seattle close to the middle of the league ranks. However, both the Los Angeles Rams (NFC West winners) and the Philadelphia Eagles (last season's Super Bowl champions) also had 13 picks by their defenses.

Purdy had never lost in Seattle before until Sunday's four-point win at Lumen Field. For an average of $53 million per season after this year, the 49ers quarterback should be playing better.

Two seasons ago, when San Francisco made it to the Super Bowl, Purdy had not thrown an interception until Week 6 on the road against the Cleveland Browns.

He already has two to begin 2025, and neither pick was exactly a bad-luck turnover.

The 49ers' next opponent is the New Orleans Saints. At home against another NFC West team, the Arizona Cardinals, the Saints' defense held Kyler Murray to less than 170 passing yards, despite completing 21 of his 29 passes.

Purdy must do better and avoid turning over the ball against a team that is predicted to do even worse this season than the 49ers did last year.
