Women's football round-up: Aston Villa boss satisfied after opening day stalemate

Captain Rachel Daly hit the bar with a first half shot while Lynn Wilms came close to nicking all three points for the visiting team when her late free-kick also hit the woodwork.

While frustrated not to win the game, Arroyo saw positives in the performance.

She said: “It’s good to start not conceding goals. It is good to start with some points.

“They asked us a lot of questions but in most parts of the game we were able to answer them properly.

“We need to manage the game a bit better at times but the big picture, I am satisfied with a point.”

Wolves staged a second half comeback to beat Manchester United Academy in the National League Cup.

Danny McNamara’s team made it two wins from two in the group stage of the competition, in a match which underwent a late change of venue.

Adverse weather conditions meant the game, originally scheduled for AFC Telford United’s New Bucks Head Stadium, was instead played behind closed doors at Compton Park.

And after a goal-less first half, it was the visitors who went ahead five minutes after the restart through Layla Drury.

Wolves were behind for only three minutes as Charlotte Greengrass levelled things up, before then going in front through Rachael Quigley.

Sareet Binning, 16, then became one of the youngest players in club history when she came off the bench, with Amelia Hiscox then putting the result beyond doubt by scoring deep into stoppage time.

Albion also made it two wins from two in the cup with a 2-0 triumph over Leicester City at The Hawthorns.

Rhianne Oakley and Molly Kehoe were both on the mark early for the Baggies.

“I thought it was a professional performance from the players, to start the game quickly and score those chances is what we asked for,” said boss Siobhan Hodgetts-Still.

“We dominated the game and their keeper made some really good saves.”

Kidderminster Harriers boss Harry O’Neill felt his team failed to do the basics in a 2-0 cup defeat at Worcester City.

The hosts netted twice in the second half to take the win and O’Neill said: “They saw an opportunity and grasped it. We need to stand up to these occasions.”

Elsewhere in the National League Cup, Sporting Khalsa were 3-1 winners at Sutton Coldfield Town but Stourbridge suffered a 4-0 defeat at Leafield Athletic.

Walsall are through to the second qualifying round of the FA Cup after a second half fightback earned them a 2-1 win at Whitchurch Alport. Saanya Najib got the winner, 13 minutes from time, after Lyndsey Ross-Barker had equalised.
