WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) - Week 1 in the NFL and high school football are complete, and our Kansas college teams continued their seasons on Saturday.
Here’s a look back at some of the games that caught our attention:
Friday:Chargers 27, Chiefs 21 - Kansas City started slow and couldn’t overcome an early 10-0 deficit, dropping their Week 1 showdown in Brazil 27-21 to the Los Angeles Chargers.
Quarterback Patrick Mahomes finished the night with more than 300 yards of total offense, but the Chiefs defense failed to get critical stops when needed.
Friday:Hays 22, Derby 21 - With the Indians trailing 21-14, Viegra led the Indians to an 18-play 96 yard drive, capped off by junior running back Braxton Basgall catching a touchdown pass in the corner of the end zone. The Indians sealed the game when senior Parker McGuire skied to catch the 2-point conversion.
Friday:Hutchinson 34, Andover Central 0 - The defending 4A champs were humbled at home Friday night.
Saturday:Army 24, Kansas State 21 - Army held a 40:44 to 19:16 advantage in time of possession and is the first K-State opponent to rush for more than 200 yards since late in the 2023 season.
Saturday:Missouri 42, Kansas 31 - The series, which began in 1891 and remains among the most-played in Division I football, had been on hiatus since 2011, when Missouri left the Big 12 for the SEC.
That move only added another layer of animosity to a rivalry between states that traces its history to the Civil War, and the bloody conflict between slave states and free states.
