The two former Newcastle United stars shortlisted for the Premier League's Hall of Fame

Two former Newcastle United players have been nominated for a place in the Premier League’s prestigious Hall of Fame.

It is that time of year again when the Premier League induct two of the finest footballers to have ever played in the competition.

This year, there are 15 top candidates, with the likes of Edin Hazard, Yaya Toure and Gary Neville in with a shout of becoming the next inductees.

Newcastle United have two former players in the Hall of Fame, with Alan Shearer becoming the very first inductee and Andy Cole receiving the nod a couple of years later.

Now, two more former Newcastle players are in with a shout of being inducted, one player who is loved by the fans, and another much less so.

Les Ferdinand and Michael Owen nominated for Premier League Hall of Fame

Newcastle legends have come and gone through the years, and there are players in the squad right now who could be in with a shout of getting into the illustrious Hall of Fame in the future.

For now, the attention is on two former players, Les Ferdinand and Michael Owen, who have become the next Newcastle stars to be nominated for a spot in the Hall.

Ferdinand, known as ‘Sir Les’ by Newcastle fans, joined the Magpies from QPR in 1995, scoring an impressive 41 goals in 68 Premier League games while being managed by Kevin Keegan.

Owen will be receiving his nomination more for his contributions to clubs like Liverpool and Manchester United rather than Newcastle. The striker signed in 2005, but lost the trust of the fanbase after requesting to leave the club on multiple occasions.

Fans have the chance to vote for who they would like to be inducted into the Hall of Fame, so they may opt for Ferdinand over Owen.

Which other Newcastle United players are worthy of joining the Premier League Hall of Fame?

Perhaps one day, the likes of Bruno Guimaraes will be in with a shout of getting into the Hall of Fame. The Brazilian has already solidified his legendary status on Tyneside, so he would surely get the vote of the fans.

While Owen and Ferdinand have received their nominations this year, there are many, many other Newcastle players in with a shout of getting the nod in the future.

The likes of Peter Beardsley, Craig Bellamy and David Ginola are all former Newcastle players who could be handed a nomination in the future. These players are recognised as some of the best the club has ever had, and are remembered by the fans to this day for their contributions.

A whole year could be dedicated to Newcastle players who are more than worthy of making it into the Premier League’s Hall of Fame, so expect to see many more from the club listed in the next few years.
