Nottingham Forest had their eye on West Ham United’s Crysencio Summerville this summer, it has been claimed.
Strengthening out wide was a key focus for the Reds as they tweaked Nuno Espirito Santo’s squad before the transfer window closed. Recruiting for the flanks was already on the agenda at the start of the summer, then became even more of a priority following the departures of Anthony Elanga and Ramon Sosa.
Forest considered a number of potential targets as they sought to find the right additions. In the end, Dan Ndoye and Omari Hutchinson put pen to paper Trentside before Dilane Bakwa bolstered Nuno’s options further when he joined on deadline day.
Had the summer worked out differently, though, a different face might have come through the City Ground doors. According to The Athletic, Summerville was wanted by the Reds at one stage.
Forest reportedly viewed the 23-year-old as ‘an ideal replacement’ for Elanga after the Swede had departed for Newcastle United. But it seems the Hammers winger was not keen on a move.
Borussia Dortmund were also interested in him at the time and enquired about snapping him up. However, Summerville apparently had ‘no interest’ in leaving West Ham and told his representatives he had ‘unfinished business’ at the club.
A hamstring injury meant the former Netherlands youth international missed the second half of last season. His appearance from off the bench against Forest last weekend was only his second run-out under manager Graham Potter.
Summerville played a significant role as the visitors triumphed 3-0 in the Premier League clash. He teed up Jarrod Bowen for the opening goal and then won the penalty from which Lucas Paqueta doubled the Hammers’ advantage.
The Reds made 13 signings in total before the window closed last Monday. In the build-up to deadline day itself, they had several wingers on their radar before they got a deal over the line for Bakwa.
Being toppled by West Ham represented a first defeat of the season for Nuno’s side. They will look to bounce back when they make the trip to the Emirates Stadium to face Arsenal this Saturday (12.30pm kick-off).
