GREEN BAY, Wis. -- The Detroit Lions were stuck in check-down city, with nearly 75% of their rush attempts getting hit behind the line of scrimmage.
It’s one of those games where some of the offensive stats coming out of an ugly loss are somehow even worse than expected. The Lions lost their opener to the Green Bay Packers 27-13. They scored their lone touchdown of the day with under a minute left while trailing by three possessions.
MLive’s Dungeon of Doom podcast watched it all unfold from Lambeau Field. Hosts Ben Raven and Kory Woods discuss what went wrong, the small aspects they liked and looked ahead to what is a crucial bounce-back opportunity against Ben Johnson and the Chicago Bears next weekend.
From a measly 3.3 air yards per completion to running backs recording 14 catches for just 49 yards to 16 rush attempts getting hit before crossing the line of scrimmage, the stats behind Detroit’s offensive struggles is even worse in some regards than the eye test suggested.
Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs set a new NFL record for the fewest receiving yards for someone who recorded double-digit catches in a single game.
“Goff averaged only 3.3 air yards per completion, eight completions behind the line of scrimmage. The 3.3 air yards per pass completion was his fifth lowest mark since joining the Lions in 2021,” Raven shared on the podcast.
“I mean, it was check-down city,”
With a crucial NFC North matchup against Chicago looming in Week 2, Detroit’s new-look offensive coaching staff faces immense pressure to recapture the explosive identity that made them one of the league’s most feared units.
