Former NBA champion and Montrealer Bennedict Mathurin awarded medal of National Assembly

NBA Eastern Conference Champion and Montreal native Bennedict Mathurin and his sister, former Division-1 basketball player Jennifer Mathurin, were awarded Monday the Medal of the National Assembly of Quebec for outstanding community service.

The medal was awarded by Liberal MNA Madwa-Nika Cadet and Montreal-North Mayor Christine Black alongside community leaders, family, friends and colleagues, according to a press release from the Marthurin Family Foundation.

This medal is a reminder of why we do this work. It’s about showing young people that they are seen, valued, and capable of achieving their dreams,” said Jennifer Mathurin, Founder and President of the Mathurin Family Foundation.

“Montreal-North raised me. It’s a privilege to give back to the place that shaped who I am, and show kids here that their dreams are possible,” added Bennedict Mathurin.

Their awards were issued during the third-annual basketball camp at Henri-Bourassa High School that saw the participation of 150 youth from Montreal-North.

The initiative started as a grassroots project spearheaded by the Mathurin Foundation, and is now supported by the likes of Adidas, St-Hubert, Gatorade, CLIF, and Beats.
