'A lot': £29m Chelsea wonderkid says Newcastle United's Bruno Guimaraes is really helping him…

Bruno Guimaraes is a leader for Newcastle United and for Brazil.

The 27-year-old is starting his second campaign as Newcastle United captain, having guided the club to Carabao Cup glory last season.

Eddie Howe believes Bruno has become better since being given the armband. After a slow start, he really has started to thrive due to the added responsibility.

As well as being a key player for Newcastle United, Bruno Guimaraes is also a key player for Brazil. He regularly starts in midfield, establishing himself as one of their more senior players.

He leads by example on the international stage, which has proven to be very useful for Chelsea teenager Estevao Willian.

Estevao, who joined Chelsea for an initial £29million, is currently away on international duty with Brazil, representing his country alongside Bruno.

They both scored in Brazil’s 3-0 win over Chile, as they continue their preparations for the 2026 World Cup.

It will be Estevao’s first major tournament, with the 18-year-old making his Selecao debut in September 2024.

Now he has six caps to his name, and is becoming more comfortable playing for his country. That is partially because of Bruno, with Estevao namedropping the Toon midfielder when asked who he is closest to in the Brazil squad.

“The relationship here with everyone is really good, you know,” he told Globo Esporte.

“Of course, I am closer to Joao [Pedro] and Andrey, because we’re together every day there [at Chelsea].

“Regarding the older players, Marquinhos is a guy who’s been helping me a lot. Alisson, Raphinha, Paqueta, Bruno Guimaraes. These guys are helping me a lot in this early stage of the Brazilian national team.”

How many times has Bruno Guimaraes played for Brazil?

In terms of the current Brazil squad, Bruno is one of the most experienced players.

He has represented his country 36 times so far, with his 37th cap potentially coming against Bolivia on Tuesday night. That game is Brazil’s final World Cup qualifier, having already booked their place at next year’s tournament in the USA, Canada and Mexico.

In the current 24-man Brazil squad, only five players have won more caps for their country than Bruno. They are Casemiro, Marquinhos, Alisson Becker, Lucas Paqueta and Richarlison.
