Man Utd have cleared the decks this summer but they still need to strengthen in several areas with one potential target talking up a move to the Premier League.

It has been a strange summer for Manchester United and one that won’t be fully assessed until the end of the season.

The rebuild was affected by the need to move big earners on but thoughts will already have turned to the January transfer window and beyond with fine tuning rather than wholesale changes now being needed.

Denzel Dumfries hints at Premier League move

One player who might be targeted to add experience and who could be perfect for Amorim’s system is someone who has been mentioned before. Denzel Dumfries has been linked with United as a player who could add experience and who could be an upgrade on the right-hand side of midfield. Not only has the 29-year old played as a wing-back for his club side, but also for the Netherlands where, with 11 goals in 66 caps, has shown how much damage he can cause at the sharp end of the pitch.

Speaking after a nervy win over Lithuania, Dumfries was asked specifically about transfer speculation and a potential move to the Premier League and his answer should give Amorim and the United recruitment team something to think about, via Dutch media outlet Soccernews: "It's a great league, of course, where I think I'll thrive. So, if the opportunity ever comes along, I'll definitely grab it," said Dumfries, who has enjoyed a successful international break.

Several of the full-back's international teammates already play in England. "It's a fantastic league, of course. I'm playing in Serie A myself, of course, but it's great to see so many players playing in the Premier League. I think the Premier League is known for its intensity. Serie A is very tactically intense. As you see, when we play each other in the Champions League, it's always a clash, and we're evenly matched. They're two different ways of approaching football."

Why Dumfries could be a key signing for United

Dumfries is known for his athleticism, however, he isn’t just a willing runner or a player who works hard for the team. The Inter Milan star is a manager’s dream in that his versatility allows whoever he is playing for to adapt and change without making any substitutions.

Were United to sign him, he would be equally at home at right-back in a back four or on the right-hand side of midfield where he usually plays.

One of the current problems at United is that players are being asked to perform in roles that they aren’t used to, even Bruno Fernandes is having to adapt and play in a slightly deeper position to make room for new signings like Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo.

Dumfries is a natural right wing-back and wouldn’t have to adjust or learn the role and could be the sort of signing that makes an immediate difference. There is an issue with depth, but there is also still too big a gap between the top performers and the rest.
