Report: Newcastle eyeing 2026 move to sign £87m Barcelona star after holding talks in summer

Newcastle United failed to complete a move for Barcelona star Marc Casado in the summer transfer window, according to reports - with the Magpies having made enquiries to bring the 21-year-old midfielder into Eddie Howe's side to pad out their midfield.

The Magpies finished fifth in the Premier League last season, qualifying for the Champions League in the process due to UEFA handing out two extra spots for the top two performing nations in European competition. That, coupled with their first trophy in 70 years after winning the League Cup, means that the Geordie outfit are as attractive a proposition as they have ever been, though Casado was a failed target.

The report by TBR Football states that Casado was the subject of interest from Newcastle in the summer transfer window. The Magpies had a tough transfer window, failing to sign any first-choice strikers for Howe until late on in the window, as well as failing to land England duo Marc Guehi and James Trafford after long-standing interest.

Still, six first-team signings came through the ranks in the north east, with Anthony Elanga, Jacob Ramsey, Malick Thiaw, Nick Woltemade, Yoane Wissa and Aaron Ramsdale all finding their way to Tyneside in the summer - though that was offset by Alexander Isak's British record departure to Liverpool and Sean Longstaff's exit to Leeds United.

But although they made two replacements for Isak in Woltemade and Wissa, they haven't replaced Longstaff's role of being a squad midfielder - something that they tried to remedy with the arrival of Casado.

It's believed that Casado is a player that Newcastle are huge admirers of, and they enquired about him in the summer as they looked to bring in backup for Sandro Tonali, Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton. The Barcelona star does boast a €100million (£87million) release clause, though Newcastle likely wouldn't pay that high of a fee.

It's thought that Newcastle could once again return for Casado in the 2026 transfer windows, where he will be in demand after breaking through into Barcelona's starting XI. Interestingly, Newcastle host the La Liga champions in the Champions League next week, and that could be an audition of some sorts for Casado if he is to feature at St. James' Park.

The Catalonian-born star came into Barcelona's academy ranks in 2016 at the age of 13, making his debut in November 2022 at the age of just 19. He's since made 42 appearances for the first-team, playing in 36 games last season as Barça won the domestic double, marking a successful season for their young squad.
