Newcastle United's £35m Psr decision is haunting the club more and more as time passes

· 8 September 2025, 18:00

**As Newcastle United fans, we didn't really need much more reason to be upset at selling Elliot Anderson last summer, especially given the backstory to the move.**

Elliot Anderson is one of our own, a Geordie through and through who rose through the academy into the first team and, were it not for injuries during his time under Eddie Howe, there's no telling how much of a hero he'd be on Tyneside now.

Unfortunately, a back injury kept him out for much of Newcastle's Champions League season in 2023/24, which was a season that saw another academy product, Lewis Miley, thrust into the first team due to a lack of depth in a squad that was picking up injuries regularly. Not to mention the 10-month ban for Sandro Tonali.

Had Anderson been fit, he would have taken Tonali's place in the regular starting XI and could have kicked on massively, making a move away from the club impossible.

TalkSPORT's Nottingham Forest journo has compared Elliot Anderson to some elite players

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As things turned out, Newcastle were pretty powerless to prevent Anderson's exit and a £35 million switch to Nottingham Forest was reluctantly green-lit in a successful attempt to stave off sanctions for breaching PSR Rules.

Elliot Anderson has been phenomenal for Nottingham Forest and went on to help England Under-21s retain the Under-21 European Championship this summer.

This weekend, Anderson made his senior England debut in the win against Andorra, where he picked up plenty of praise from pundits and fans alike with him now being eyed as the future for England.

Compared to Paul Gascoigne by Newcastle fans, TalkSPORT reporter Max Scott has said he's a combination of Zinedine Zidane, Roy Keane and Paul Scholes. We're not sure praise comes much higher.

Nottingham Forest will struggle to keep hold of Elliot Anderson for too long

It's another reason to hate PSR because without it, Anderson would still be a Newcastle player. Whether he'd have been given the same opportunities to push on as he's had at Forest is another question entirely.

Newcastle failed to add a buy-back clause into Anderson's deal with Forest, too, so if the Magpies want him back, they are going to have to pay through the nose for him.

Max Scott admitted to TalkSPORT that Forest are going to have their work cut out for them to keep hold of Anderson, and we imagine that as soon as there's any suggestion of him leaving The City Ground, Newcastle will be there.
