The 10 worst errors Andre Onana made at Manchester United, with mistake-strewn spell coming to an end

Andre Onana is set to leave Manchester United to join Turkish side Trabzonspor on loan for the rest of the season.

Manchester United have agreed a deal for Andre Onana to go on loan to Trabzonspor for the rest of 2025/26.

It comes after Onana was dropped down to third choice behind new signing Senne Lammens and Altay Bayindir.

Onana’s spell at Manchester United has been action-packed, and not always for the better. Here is a look at the goalkeeper’s worst ever errors since joining.

Andre Onana’s worst mistakes

Here is a look at the NINE worst mistakes Andre Onana made in a Manchester United shirt…

Onana ‘sits down’ vs Awoniyi: Man Utd 3-2 Nottingham Forest

Andre Onana’s second game at Old Trafford saw him concede two goals in the opening four minutes. One of them was farcical, when he fell to the floor when faced with a one-on-one with Taiwo Awoniyi.

Peter Schmeichel blasted: “I honestly couldn’t believe what I was seeing for the first goal,. So many mistakes and so much went wrong.

“There’s so much space left behind them, Rashford is the last man, doesn’t win the tackle and Onana makes it easy for Awoniyi.”

Nightmare in Germany: Bayern Munich 4-3 Man Utd

Manchester United scored three goals at Bayern Munich and still managed to lose, courtesy of two Andre Onana mistakes.

Onana admitted after the game: “It’s difficult. I think in the beginning we were good but after my mistake, we lost control of the game. I’m the one who let the team down.

“I have a lot to prove, because to be honest my start in Manchester is not so good.”

Onana burns Casemiro: Man Utd 2-3 Galatasaray

One of Andre Onana’s strengths was supposed to be his distribution. But this was where he let his teammates down in this shock Champions League loss.

Onana played out a weak pass to create a golden opportunity for the visiting side, which led to Casemiro making a last-ditch tackle to get sent off.

Reduced to 10 men, including Sofyan Amrabat at left-back, United were overwhelmed in the final 15 minutes and lost the game, despite leading twice.

Turkish disaster: Galatasaray 3-3 Man Utd

Another high-scoring game saw Manchester United’s sharpness at one end, let down by woeful goalkeeping on the other side.

Onana conceded two soft shots from Hakim Ziyech, including one that somehow squirmed under him despite the fact he got both hands on it.

At full-time Onana was seen with his head in his hands, fully recognising that his mistakes had effectively blown United’s chances of qualification.

Cup final error sneaks in: Man Utd 2-1 Man City

Manchester United’s FA Cup Final win over Manchester City was a joyous occasion with the Red Devils winning the trophy for the first time since 2016.

United led the game 2-0 after two first half goals from Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo and weathered the storm from City well in the second half, one moment aside.

Onana allowed a soft Jeremy Doku shot from outside the box to sneak in at his near post. It was forgotten about because United won – but it could have been costly.

Gibbs-White shot bobbles in: Man Utd 2-3 Nottingham Forest

Andre Onana had begun the 2024/25 season relatively well, before he began to unravel in the month of December.

The rot began with Onana conceding a soft shot that went straight at him from Morgan Gibbs-White at Old Trafford, that brought back memories of Massimo Taibi.

The effort even left the scorer stunned, with Gibbs-White commenting: “I didn’t [think it was going in] at all, to be fair. I don’t want to discredit Onana, he’s an incredible goalkeeper, but when I had the shot, I thought he was going to pick it up.”

‘The Olimpico’: Wolves 1-0 Man Utd

December 2024 was a month of set piece woes for United, with Andre Onana exposed in Manchester United’s defeat to Arsenal.

Altay Bayindir dropped a clanger before conceding direct from a corner in the Carabao Cup against Spurs – before Andre Onana did exactly the same thing against Wolves.

The goal left United fans infuriated, with Onana’s blunder sealing a 1-0 Boxing Day defeat.

Setting himself up for a fall: Lyon 2-2 Man Utd

Andre Onana created a pre-game controversy ahead of the Europa League quarter-final where he wound up Lyon, claiming Manchester United were a ‘way better’ team before a ball had been kicked.

It led to a war of words with Lyon’s Nemanja Matic, who branded him, ‘one of the worst goalkeepers’ in Manchester United history.

Onana followed it up by making two mistakes in United’s 2-2 draw with Lyon in France, first by misjudging a cross and allowing it to nestle in the bottom corner. He then spilled a rebound straight to Rayan Cherki to equalise in stoppage time.

Europa League Final error: Man Utd 0-1 Tottenham

Andre Onana and Luke Shaw were at fault for Manchester United conceding the winning goal in the first half of the Europa League Final in Bilbao.

Shaw diverted in for an own goal at his near post, with Onana left on the turf clawing desperately trying to keep it out, and failing.

The buck stops with Onana for this one, he should have kept the ball out at his near post and prevented it from trickling into the net.

Blunders at Blundell Park: Grimsby Town 2-2 Man Utd (Grimsby win 12-11 on penalties)

A ‘Hall of Shame’ performance from Andre Onana, with the goalkeeper arguably saving the worst until last, against League Two side Grimsby Town.

Onana conceded a soft shot at his near post for the opener, before attempting to claim a cross and wiping out his own players, leaving a tap-in for the hosts.

The penalty shootout proved problematic, with Onana getting a hand to five penalties but only actually managing to prevent one from going in. He ended up conceding 12 spot-kicks in total.

This match proved to be the final straw, Onana’s last game for the club before being sent out on loan.

Other notable incidents…

Almost giving away a penalty on his Premier League debut vs Wolves when attempting to claim a cross.

Being lobbed from the halfway line in a pre-season friendly game at Old Trafford against Lens.

Andre Onana’s positive moments

The bad certainly outweighed the good for Andre Onana, but in the interests of fairness we will pick out three moments where he covered himself in glory.

Penalty save vs Copenhagen: The one bright spark in Onana’s woeful Champions League campaign, he made an injury-time penalty save to help United secure a 1-0 home win vs FC Copenhagen.

Shootout success vs Coventry: United just about staved off total humiliation against Coventry City in the FA Cup semi-finals, and Andre Onana played his part. He made vital saves in the shootout to book a return to Wembley.

‘Save of the month’ vs Ipswich: Onana made a stunning save in Ruben Amorin’s first game in charge to deny Liam Delap from point blank range. He later won the Premier League’s ‘Save of the Month’ award, but sadly could not sustain his form.
